NEW DELHI: A two-day lesbian film festival, which will also screen Deepa Mehta’s ‘Fire’, will be held at Delhi University from Friday.

Organized by DU’s Gender Studies Group, the films will be shown at the department of political science. Entry is free and open to all.

The festival will kick off at 10am with Jabbar Patel’s ‘Subah’. The film, starring Smita Patil and Girish Karnad, was simultaneously made in Marathi and titled, ‘Umbartha’. Mehta’s ‘Fire’, starring Nandita Das and Shabana Azmi, will be screened at the same time on Saturday.

Three works by Kolkata-based filmmaker, Debalina Majumder, will also be featured in the festival. One of them is ‘Ebang Bewarish’ (and ‘The Unclaimed’). The documentary tells the story of Swapna and Sucheta, lovers who committed suicide in West Bengal’s Nandigram in February 2011.

Another film, ‘Taar Cheye Shey Anek Aaro’ (More than a friend), looks into the life of four individuals in the background of rising awareness on same-sex relationships. The film also has real-life interviews of people from various sections of society.

A student-panel discussion on lesbian representation in cinema will also be held on Saturday at 3pm.
